For most of its history, Mission Bay has been an important seaport on the eastern seaboard of Florida. It has had two seaports since the early nineteenth century: First Bank Street and later, First Causeway. The first port was constructed for ferry operations and was largely a wooden structure with two deep drawers below the boats. It has often been referred to as the “crown jewel” of Florida. Many early homes in this area were constructed with this type of design, including two mansions with over forty interior rooms each, and a string of bungalows on the seawall.
