Frequently Asked Questions

What Is a Frameless Shower Door?

A frameless shower door is a custom glass enclosure made from thick, tempered safety glass that doesn't require bulky metal framing around the edges for support. Instead, the glass is secured with minimal hardware, such as hinges, clamps, or channels, creating a clean, open, and modern look.

Unlike traditional framed shower doors, frameless designs showcase your tile, make bathrooms feel larger and brighter, and are easier to keep clean because there are fewer places for soap scum and mildew to collect.

Every frameless shower door from The Original Frameless Shower Doors® is custom manufactured to fit your exact space, allowing you to choose the door style, glass, hardware finish, and configuration that best matches your bathroom and your style.

What does frameless and semi-frameless mean?

A true frameless shower door is made from thick, tempered safety glass and uses minimal hardware, with no metal framing around the edges of the glass. This creates a clean, open look that highlights your tile and gives your bathroom a more spacious, modern feel.

A semi-frameless shower door, on the other hand, includes metal framing around the fixed glass panels. While the door itself may appear frameless, the surrounding panels are supported by visible metal frames, resulting in a different overall appearance.

Buyer Beware: Not all "frameless" shower doors are truly frameless. Some manufacturers market semi-frameless enclosures as frameless because only the door lacks a frame. If you're looking for the sleek, uninterrupted look of genuine frameless glass, be sure to ask whether all glass panels are frameless—not just the door.

How much do frameless shower doors cost?

The cost of a custom frameless shower door typically ranges from $700 to $2,500 or more, depending on the size of your shower, the type and thickness of the glass, the hardware you choose, and the complexity of the design.

Every shower is unique, so your final price will vary based on your exact measurements and customization options. At The Original Frameless Shower Doors®, each enclosure is custom manufactured to fit your space, ensuring a precise fit and a finished look that's built to last.

The best way to determine pricing is to design your shower door online or request a personalized quote based on your project.

Do steam showers require a special glass enclosure?

Yes. Steam shower enclosures are designed to retain heat and steam more effectively than standard shower doors. Many feature glass that extends to the ceiling or includes a transom for improved performance.

Can a frameless shower be used for a steam shower?

Absolutely. Frameless glass is one of the most popular choices for steam showers because it provides a clean, modern appearance while effectively containing steam when properly designed.

Can I install one myself?

Yes! While installing a traditional custom frameless shower door can be challenging, The Original Frameless Shower Doors® has made DIY installation easier than ever with our exclusive InstallationEASY® system.

Unlike many custom shower doors that require on-site cutting or fabrication, InstallationEASY® enclosures are precision-manufactured to your exact measurements and arrive ready to install. With zero on-site fabrication, you'll save time while achieving the same beautiful, all-frameless look.

How long does it take to get a custom shower door?

Choose professional installation, or have your shower door shipped nationwide through our InstallationEASY® program and install it yourself with expert support every step of the way.

What should I use the clean my custom shower door?

Keeping your frameless shower door looking its best is simple. Use a non-abrasive glass cleaner with a soft microfiber cloth or a squeegee to remove water spots and soap residue. Avoid abrasive cleaners, harsh chemicals, steel wool, or rough sponges, as they can damage the glass or hardware finish.

For even easier maintenance, The Original Frameless Shower Doors® recommends StayCLEAN® Glass. This proprietary glass protection features a lifetime warranty against permanent spotting and staining, helping water and minerals rinse away more easily while reducing cleaning time. Think of it as long-lasting protection that keeps your shower looking cleaner with less effort.

What is an operable transom?

An operable transom is a glass panel above the shower door that can be opened after your steam session to release heat and humidity, helping the enclosure dry more quickly.

Can I customize my steam shower enclosure?

Yes. You can choose your glass type, hardware finish, door configuration, and enclosure layout to complement your bathroom and steam system.
